EL ANGEL ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

 

Day 1
Quito - Otavalo.

We will drive north towards the Province of Lakes, Imbabura. During the trip you will taste the different flavors of northern highlands cultures and landscapes. Our fist stop is in Calderon Town, well known for its bread figures. Then, we will continue towards Guayllabamba Valley, where you will be delighted by the different tastes of typical exotic fruits. Continuing north we will arrive to Cayambe town, where you will enjoy the magnificent view of the snow-capped mountain, Cayambe (5,790 m), the world highest point where the Equator Line crosses, and of course taste the famous salt biscuits with leaf cheese. During the way, you will be impressed by the picturesque view of the Imbabura Mountain and the San Pablo Lake. We will visit the famous Otavalo Indian Market, Cotacachi Village, well known for its leather products, and the Cuicocha Crater Lake. In the afternoon, we will arrive to “Santa Ana Hacienda”. Enjoy a “Noche Imbabureña” with music bomb where children aged between 8 a 12 years old play music with rustic and old instruments overnight. (D)

 

Day 2
Otavalo – Tulcan – El Angel Reserve

For those who wake up early, optional cow milking tour. Afterwards enjoy your breakfast and then a tour to the Hacienda Santa Ana. Where you will be able to enjoy eight different activities according to your interests, such as: harvesting asparagus, panelero trapiche, breeding guinea pigs, greenhouse (tomato), sugar canes crops, milking cattle, short-cycle crops, horseback riding and more. Continue towards “Gruta de la Paz” a sanctuary, important for inhabitants’ beliefs. In the afternoon visit the Tulcan‘s Cementery, and the Paluz Cascade. Late afternoon arrive to Polylepis Lodge. After dinner you will enjoy a spectacular hike of torches, stories and goblins. Accommodation. (B, D)

 

Day 3
El Voladero Lake & Polylepis Forest

After breakfast a conference about the moor and its ecological functions will take place. During the morning you will have a hike at El Angel Ecological Reserve, where you will find a world unique ecosystem "Frailejones” you will also visit “El Voladero Lake” In the afternoon enjoy a hike through a singular Millennial Polylepis Forest. After Lunch visit a local community to observe the different handicrafts they produce. (FB)

Day 4
Moran View Point

After a breakfast visit, a nice place from which you will be able to enjoy a magnificent view of Moran town as well as different landscapes, fauna and flora of the region. From this point you will also enjoy the view of different ecosystems such as Paramo, Cold Forest, Cloudy Rainforest, and the Ecological Reserve of Golondrinas. (FB)

 

Day 5
Return back to Quito, on the way visit Mascarillas town. (B)
